Why do you have to be connected to the Internet for playing computer games?

I can not even begin to wrap my mind around such a device completely stupid. Can anyone explain why they put it is a few games for me? On a hand, I planned to buy The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion 5th anniversary edition when it comes out June 28. Do you have to be connected to the Internet to play / make progress in it? Thank you I can understand why you would need internet to play a game like Starcraft or WoW (duh), but blows my mind that people need to play a player.

Assassin's Creed II, a single player game, necessary to the Internet at any time or you could not play. The reason is so that hackers can not break the game too simple, which means more sales and less piracy. Bethesda, the people who published oblivion not to a strict rule on line (most of the games is). And a re-release like this, I strongly doubt.
