Is there a small problem with the game Need for Speed: Underground 2 when you try to play 2 players?

I play Need for Speed: Underground 2 on Playstation 2. I tried to play 2 players, but for some reason it will not work. I do not own a Playstation 2 controller and I plug in my old Playstation 1 controller in the port for the second player, but it will not work for some reason. I thought the controller works with the other PS1 games, but not this one, if something is wrong with the game or is it normal that some PS2 games, you have to use a PS2 controller?

I'm sure you do because you need one analog stick
