How much money needed for Las Vegas trip?

Going to the MGM Grand in early May for about 5 nights, just wondering how much I'll need for spending money. Flight and Hotel is paid for, but going to need money for entertainment, food etc...

I generally aim for at least $200 a day, so $1000 might work.

But drinks in Vegas are expensive, particularly in the bars/clubs/pool areas. Beers can run anywhere from $7-10 and mixed drinks $10-25 - that depends on where you are and what you're getting. You can get cheaper beer and margaritas at O'Sheas and you can also find several places that sell the "yards" of frozen drinks for fairly reasonable prices. Rockhouse, by Imperial Palace, sells them and refills your glass for 1/2 price for however long you keep it. You may want to swing by a liquor store and get some of your own stuff if you plan to drink a lot - that will save you some money. You do get free drinks while gambling, but you need to tip at least $1 per drink.

You can eat fairly cheaply in Vegas. There are food courts and/or fast food places in most hotels, and a Denny's on the strip. We usually grab a $5 breakfast at Starbucks or McD's, and often a cheap lunch somewhere, and then spend a little more on dinner. The really cheap buffets aren't really worth it, but you can find some good ones for around $20 for dinner (Paris is one). But if you want a nice dinner, it can be $50 or more per person. Many of the nicer restaurants are open for lunch and prices tend to be cheaper then; you can have a nice lunch for the experience of the restaurant, and then go cheaper for dinner if you want.

There is great shopping Vegas - high-end shops and also a huge mall on the strip.

Gambling is what you make of it. I don't gamble much, but when I do, I take with me only what I'm willing to lose so that I'm not tempted to keep going once it's all gone.

If you plan to see a show, you'll want to consider money for that as well. Tickets to the big shows are often $75 and up. You can check out the Tix4Tonight booths on the strip, which sell discounted tickets for same-day shows, up to 50% off. You can't count on them having a particular show, but it's a good way to get a deal on a show if you don't have something specific in mind.
